How to Submit Articles for The Shape of Enrichment Publication |
Overall Considerations Articles concerned with all aspects of enrichment are accepted. We definitely prefer articles about specific items and techniques that you have actually used/implemented. Since our focus is enrichment and how it benefits animals, be sure to give a complete description of:
Feature articles can cover a variety of enrichment opportunities that benefit the animal(s) and improve animal welfare. As a few examples, these include: social interaction; cognitive development or stimulation; food and browse choices and presentation; enclosure design and construction; specific items that offer opportunities for investigation or physical exercise; and husbandry and health care training techniques that benefit the animals. |

Articles of any length are accepted; from 200 to 1,000 words are preferred, but articles both shorter and longer have been published. Articles need not be polished or even completed before submission. One of our favorite articles started as notes on a paper towel - literally! The editors are willing to work with prospective authors to produce the final version.
Photos to go with your article are highly recommended. Photos of the animals using the enrichment, any pertinent photos of things like enclosure details, photos/sketches of the materials and steps used to make an item and the final product, photos of individual animals involved are all very much appreciated and are the most effective for presenting your article and illustrating your points.
Technical papers are accepted. However, these will be rewritten into an appropriate format. The editors will rewrite technical papers at the author's request. If you are submitting a technical paper, please only send us the introduction, materials, methods, results, and discussion. Please do not include an abstract or lengthy review of other literature on the subject or species – we re looking for the meat of your article, not what others have said.
Text must be submitted in an MS Word document or a RTF formatted document. Do NOT embed any graphics (photos, graphs, diagrams, etc.) in your text file.
Photographs and illustrations should be submitted as separate jpg or png files. EACH graphic MUST be in its own file. Photos and illustrations should be a resolution of at least 72 dpi and a minimum of 5 inches x 7 inches in size - high resolution and larger size are preferred.
Graphs and tables must also be submitted as separate files from the article text. These should be readable at a small size and include headers, labels, and color keys as part of the file.
