NEW! Shape of Enrichment Workshop in Omaha, NE
9-13 June, 2013, OmahaÕs Henry Doorly
Zoo and Aquarium, Omaha, Nebraska
This four-day workshop is sponsored by the Omaha AAZK Chapter and
will be instructed by Valerie Hare and Jay Pratte.
The format for this event will be interactive with hands-on enrichment projects and designed for
professionals of all levels in captive animal husbandry. Content will be
tailored to registered participants so that everyone has an optimum experience.

NEW! Training and Enrichment Workshop for Zoo and
Aquarium Animals (TEWZAA) in Galveston, TX
11-15 November, 2013, Moody Gardens, Galveston, Texas
This unique five-day workshop is designed for
keepers, aquarists, managers, supervisors, curators, and veterinarians working
will all species of animals held in zoo, aquariums, rescue center, and
sanctuaries. Workshop
format includes lecture, discussion, small group projects, demonstrations, and
hands- on training and enrichment opportunities with Moody GardenÕs diverse
collection. Skills taught are directly related to enhancing staffÕs ability to
manage animal behavior, improve animal welfare, and provide optimal care for
captive animals. For

Conference on Environmental Enrichment (ICEE)
The 11th ICEE will be held in Dinokeng
Wildlife Reserve (near Pretoria), South Africa from 15-18 October,
2013. Information and an application for The Shape of Enrichment Travel Grant
will be posted soon. Watch this page, and the ICEE section of this website for
more details on the conference, post/pre-conference workshop and activities,
and scholarships.

3rd Shape—Brasil
REEC
Approximately 65 participants from 5 countries met at S‹o
Paulo University, S‹o Paulo, Brazil on 29-30 September,
2012. Guest speakers included Donald Broom (U.K.), Carla Forte Maiollino Molento (Brazil),
Gerardo Martinez (Mexico), and Valerie Hare (U.S.A.); the main focus for the
conference was environmental enrichment as it pertains to Animal Welfare.
1st Brazilian Carnivore Enrichment
Workshop
This 4-day
workshop was hosted by Paulinia Zoo in September 2012, in Paulinia,
Brazil. In addition to our normal coursework, participants from 17 institutions
in Brazil and Argentina refurbished 3 enclosures: ocelot, jagarundi,
and coati. Two were outfitted with dynamic branches and one with an arial walkway. Many thanks to Steve Veen
and Chris Hales of Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in
Kent, UK for sharing their experience and teaching us to construct this
invaluable structural enrichment! And thanks again to Boomer Ball company for donating Boomer Balls for workshop participants!
Shape—Sweden and SAZA REEC
Approximately 50
participants from Swedish zoos, universities, and welfare organizations
attended this 2-day conference, hosted by Skansen Zoo
in September, in Stockholm, Sweden. Presentations by Valerie Hare covered the
coursework from ShapeÕs Enrichment workshops: Enrichment Overview, Planning
Enrichment, Assessing Enrichment, and Problem Solving.
4th Shape--UK-Ireland REEC
This 3-day
conference was hosted by Port Lympne and Howletts Wild Animal Parks in Kent, U.K. Invited speakers included Betsy Herrelko,
Steven Shapiro, Graham Law, and Heather Bacon. Additional presentations ranged
from specific speciesÕ enrichment ideas to silage techniques. Workshops on firehose enrichment, enrichment assessment, and rope
splicing (basic and advanced) rounded out this packed program. Thanks to all
the conference organizers for a fantastic event!
Enrichment and Training Workshop in Cambodia
Over 5 days in February,
2012, Valerie Hare (The Shape of Enrichment) and Gail Laule (Active Environments) trained staff at
the Wildlife Centre and Bear Sanctuary, in Phnom Tamao,
Cambodia. All animal care staff
(40+) attended an enrichment workshop during which new enrichment ideas
were tested for banteng, gibbon, marten, and tiger.
Additionally, 10 staff members were selected to participate in lectures and
activities on positive reinforcement training techniques. Valerie and Gail wish
to thank Free the Bears for hosting them and all the participants for their
wonderful enthusiasm and hospitality!

In February, 2012, Shape—SEA held their
Third Animal Training and Enrichment Workshop at Ocean Adventure and Wildlife
in Need in Subic Bay Free Zone, Philippines. Thirty participants attended the enrichment,
training, and problem-solving lectures and activities. Species receiving new
enrichment from the participants included: sea lion, octopus, multispecies fish
enclosure, palm civet, long-tailed macaque, and scops
owl. Each participant had multiple training sessions with one of the following
species: bottlenose dolphin, false killer whale, sea lion, long-tailed macaque,
Brahminy kite, fruit bat.

In February, 2012, Shape—SEA held their
Third Animal Training and Enrichment Workshop at Ocean Adventure and Wildlife

enrichment, training, and problem-solving lectures and activities. Species
receiving new enrichment from the participants included: sea lion, octopus,
multispecies fish enclosure, palm civet, long-tailed macaque, and scops owl. Each participant had multiple training sessions
with one of the following species: bottlenose dolphin, false killer whale, sea
lion, long-tailed macaque, Brahminy kite, fruit bat.

plated lizard, pancake tortoise, roller, crane, and whistling duck. Species
trained included: lemur, fruit bat, goat, sheep, and pig.

1st Shape—Regional Workshops Held in Romania
and Hungary
In November, 2011,
Shape—SEE, EAZA, and BIAZA collaborated to hold the first
Shape—Regional Enrichment Workshops in Romania and Hungary. Each workshop
consisted of approximately 40 participants. Species enriched during the
workshop activities included:
Romania – brown bear, red
deer (elk), Japanese macaque, emu, iguana, cichlid;
Hungary – elephant, fallow deer, lynx,
macaw, ruffed lemur, fruit bat.
All workshops were well attended and received.
