Welcome to SHAPE—Africa

Robynn Ingle-Mšller

SHAPE—Africa Vice-Chairperson

Hi. I am the Enrichment & Research Coordinator at the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa in Pretoria. I have been in the industry since 1996 after stumbling onto it at the Johannesburg Zoo as a volunteer. Within a year I established the first enrichment based position in Africa. In 2000, I left the zoo industry to become a butler but soon returned to the zoo world by volunteering at the National Zoo. By 2002 I had established the second enrichment position in Africa. In 2005, I began Action Research in developing an African SPIDER Framework, which has effectively created habit-forming management skills in our staff. This has aided and encouraged enrichment-forming practices – one camp at a time.

I have also successfully established an Animal Keepers Association for Africa (AKAA) in 2005 after holding a successful Shape of Enrichment Workshop.  I am now the Chairperson of AKAA and am very excited about participating in and developing strong enrichment connections through The Shape of Enrichment, Inc. and the Shape Regionals as Vice Chair of SHAPE—Africa.
