Colette Bodenstaff
SHAPE—Africa Events Coordinator
Hello! I have worked at Sea World at uShaka
Marine World in Durban, South Africa since 1994. Starting off as a volunteer, I
worked my way up through Sea WorldÕs in-house accreditation program. I have been
integrally involved in the training and care of Sea WorldÕs resident Bottlenose
dolphins, South African fur seals and African penguins. In 1996, after spending
6 months training Californian sea lions in India, my enthusiasm for pinnipeds flourished. I am passionate about the rescue and
rehabilitation of stranded South African and Sub-antarctic
fur seals found along the Kwa-Zulu Natal coastline
each year. I am currently the assistant curator of the Sea World Mammal &
Bird Department.
I enjoy visiting as many zoos and aquaria as possible when I have the
opportunity to travel. I believe that every zoo keeper
in any facility should strive to go beyond minimum animal welfare
standards. As zoo
keepers we have the power to advance the quality of life of animals in
our care. I have become a member
of the AKAA
and have joined the SHAPE—Africa committee as the events coordinator to
do just that.
